Local farmers came together with the idea to develop a group that could perhaps take on environmental issues on farm. This group derived from active members in the VFF, LPRAC members and various boards or committees at the time.
Landcare was being developed in various areas of the state and it was seen by these visionaries to be beneficial for the Mallee farmers and the communities. The group formed in 1990 and became incorporated on May 30th 1991. Initial membership was 165, which has since increased to 500.
The group aims to develop sustainable agricultural systems for the Mallee. It also aims to encourage research and development by community groups and individuals including schools, local Council and business. The group also supports land reclamation and prevention of land degradation, and wishes to improve the VFF /Landcare image of the Mallee in general, which is estimated to be 75% of the landholders in the district.
Membership is fluid with members leaving the district and potential members moving into the area. Junior Landcare in schools has sparked new hope for the movement introducing environmental projects into the primary schools and secondary colleges.
The Mallee Landcare Group - sub-groups are spread over a large area (1,085,000 hectares), with membership of 500 people, it is unique because of its affiliation with the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) at the sub-group level.
The Mallee Landcare Group area covers 1,085,000 ha. Its northern boundary is the Murray Sunset National Park, to the east it joins the Manangatang group area, to the south the group is flanked by the Wyperfeld National Park.
Major land use in the area is dryland agriculture. Townships include Ouyen, Walpeup, Hattah, Patchewollock, Underbool & Murrayville. The Mallee Tree Group provides support to five primary schools and two secondary colleges.
