Get a news item listed

This How-to is intended for: Content Managers

How groups can have their news listed on the News page of a Gateway.

The Gateway websites enable Landcare and related groups to post their news, such as announcements, media releases, etc. on the main news page and news box on the home page. This is a relatively simple process of adding a news item to the group area, which will automatically show on the news page.

First, a group representative must be registered as a user on the relevant regional Gateway site, and have permission to manage content in a group section. Once this is enabled, the procedure is:

  1. Login and navigate to the relevant group area
  2. Navigate to the group News section
  3. Click on the add item above page, and select news item from the list
  4. When edit newsitem page loads, enter the title of the item.
  5. In the description, include the relevant group name and topic. This news will appear on the regional news page, so be sure to allow users to find the one relating to their group, area or topic. The description field will also act as the byline and first paragraph of the item.
  6. In the body text section you can add all the details of who, what, where when and why, including background information etc. If you are using the online editor, you can insert images, maps etc.
  7. You can load an image/picture which will display as a thumbnail in the news page, and when people click on the thumbnail will be able to see an enlarged picture. Click on browse button to navigate to the location of the image on your computer, and select the file.
  8. Enter the caption text only if you are adding an image to the news item.
  9. If you have further information about the news and want a direct link to show to this content, background etc loaded in the group area, or somewhere else on the same website, click on the Categorization tab, then the  browse button below related items, and when the navigation popup appears, navigate to the area these are stored. Click on insert next to each item you want to link to. Once all are selected, click on close window and they will be listed. These will show as a 'Further information' link at the bottom of the page.
  10. To add a map reference point to the item, click on the Mapping tab and enter the address or general location, then find location button.
  11. If the news item is time specific, ie only current for a specific period, it is possible to set the date that the item will become visible, and also a time when it will become invisible, by using the effective and expiration time. This is useful for items like competitions, funding deadlines or requests for submissions. When the expiration time comes around, the item will no longer show in the news page. If you want to set these, click on the Categorization tab at the top of the page, which will bring up another form.
  12. To set the time/date the item will become visible select the effective date using the drop down lists.
  13. To set the time/date the item will become hidden, select the expiration date using the drop down lists.
  14. Then click on save button. Check all the information is correct, and if required, click on the edit button above the page to change anything.
  15. This news item will automatically be in a published state, and will show on the news page, unless the effective date has been set to later.
